A pension owner who caused an electric shock accident by leaving a restroom electrical leakage risk unattended with only insulation tape was sentenced to probation.

On the 27th, Judge Hyun Sun-hye of the Criminal Division 10 at Incheon District Court announced that Mr. A (60), a pension owner in Ganghwa, was sentenced to six months in prison with a two-year probation for injury by negligence.

Mr. A was brought to trial on charges of causing injury by negligence after a guest, Mr. B (32), was electrocuted while using the restroom at the pension he operated in Ganghwa County, Incheon, around 9:30 p.m. on February 6, resulting in burns requiring eight weeks of treatment.

Mr. B, who witnessed the electric shock accident, suffered burns requiring eight weeks of treatment.

Mr. A, who had been operating the pension since April 2020, was already aware in 2022 that the power cord of the electric water heater in the guest room restroom was deteriorated and difficult to use.

At that time, Mr. A only wrapped insulation tape around the wire contact points and left it unattended. On February 6, 2022, he heard from a guest that "there is electricity coming from the restroom shower." However, Mr. A took no action upon hearing this.

Later, Mr. B and his party stayed at the pension, and while using the problematic restroom, Mr. B came into contact with the wire wrapped only with insulation tape, resulting in an electric shock accident.

The court pointed out, "Considering the degree of breach of duty of care and the extent of the victim's injuries, the culpability is not light." However, "it appears that from immediately after the accident, serious efforts were made to assist the victim and restore the damage, and the defendant paid 18 million won for medical expenses and 11 million won as a settlement to the victim, reaching an agreement. Taking all these into account, the sentence was determined," sentencing him to six months in prison with a two-year probation.
