Declaration of Entry into the Instant Rice Market Applying Nutritional Design Know-How and Technical Skills
Made with 100% Whole Oats, Rich in Dietary Fiber and Beta-Glucan
Nongshim Kellogg announced on the 28th that it is entering the instant rice market with the launch of 'Tonggwiribap,' an instant rice made from 100% whole oats. This is the first time a cereal brand has entered the domestic instant rice market.
Based on its nutritional design expertise and technological capabilities accumulated through cereals, Nongshim Kellogg has succeeded in developing the country's first instant rice made from 100% whole oats without mixing white rice. The new product Tonggwiribap is part of Kellogg's 'Gokmul Iyagi' (Grain Story) lineup, embodying Kellogg's grain know-how. It is a product that combines health, taste, and convenience, aiming to open a new horizon in the instant rice market.
Tonggwiribap is made from 100% whole oats, which is its biggest differentiating point due to its richer nutrients compared to white rice. Each 100g of the product contains dietary fiber equivalent to 5.5 bananas and protein equivalent to 2 boiled eggs. Additionally, Tonggwiribap contains 3,000mg of beta-glucan per 100g, which provides various health benefits, making it the only instant rice product with beta-glucan content labeled. It is also rich in minerals such as calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, and potassium compared to white rice.
To remove the tough texture of oats, Nongshim Kellogg applied Kellogg's unique moisture optimization method. By blending two types of oats in an optimal ratio and precisely designing the manufacturing process to prevent moisture loss, they achieved a chewy and sticky texture similar to freshly cooked rice.
Moreover, the product offers convenience with an easy cooking method. By adding 90mL of room temperature purified water to 50g of the product and microwaving it for 2 minutes, a hearty meal of about 130g of rice is ready. The new product is available in a cup type, individually packaged for one serving, and a 500g pouch type for the whole family to enjoy. The product will be sequentially stocked in online shopping malls, convenience stores nationwide, and large supermarkets.
Im Donghwan, Executive Director of Marketing at Nongshim Kellogg, said, "We expect to create greater synergy in the instant rice market based on the grain processing technology, nutritional design capabilities, and professional know-how that Kellogg has accumulated over the past 117 years in the cereal market." He added, "We will continue to lead healthy grain trends across a broader range of product categories beyond cereals and strive to develop delicious and highly nutritious products."
