Daegu City announced on the 27th that it will provide a settlement allowance of up to 1 million KRW per person to increase the number of corporate taxi drivers, which has been continuously decreasing.
The number of corporate taxi drivers decreased by 1,602, or 30%, from 5,271 at the end of 2019 to 3,669 at the end of last year. In particular, the taxi industry is facing difficulties due to a shortage of manpower caused by taxi drivers moving to other industries after COVID-19, making it urgent to prepare countermeasures.
As a measure to improve working conditions to revitalize the taxi industry and resolve the severe manpower shortage, Daegu City will pay a settlement allowance of 500,000 KRW after working for more than six months and 250,000 KRW every three months thereafter, up to a maximum of 1 million KRW for those newly employed in the taxi industry who work for up to 12 months.
The eligible persons are those who have obtained taxi driving qualifications and have been employed for the first time at a taxi company in Daegu City since 2022 and have worked for more than six months.
Kim Dae-young, Director of the Daegu City Transportation Bureau, said, “We expect that this settlement allowance support for newly employed corporate taxi drivers will resolve the manpower shortage in the taxi industry and revitalize the stagnant taxi sector,” adding, “We will continue to discover measures to improve citizens’ transportation convenience and revitalize the taxi industry.”
The settlement allowance for new employees can be applied for each quarter at the company where they are working, and the Daegu City Taxi Transportation Business Association will verify the eligible persons and pay the allowance.
