"380 Million KRW Lost in 8 Hours"... Delivery Text Message Warning

A self-employed person in Busan suffered damages amounting to approximately 380 million won due to a suspected smishing scam involving text message hacking.

According to Yonhap News on the 26th, the victim, Mr. A, clicked on an internet address (URL) link in a text message received around 4 p.m. on the 24th, which requested correction of a wrong delivery address for a parcel.

Afterwards, Mr. A's mobile phone became unresponsive, and over the course of eight hours, about 383 million won was withdrawn through smart banking.

Mr. A realized the money had been withdrawn from his bank account only the next day, on the 25th, and reported the incident to the Sasang Police Station in Busan. The police have launched an investigation based on Mr. A's statement.

Mr. A expressed, "A bank transfer requires a one-time password (OTP), so I don't understand how the money was withdrawn," adding, "All the assets I have built over my lifetime vanished in an instant due to the hacking of my phone's text messages."
