1. Multiple Opposition Parties' Struggle Methods
2. Effective Checks and Balances
3. Sincerity
4. Constitutional Amendment Preparation
Kim Yong-min, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea who is calling for the impeachment of President Yoon Suk-yeol in response to the Fukushima contaminated water discharge, once again emphasized the need for impeachment, saying, "It is possible if the majority opposition parties make a decision."
On the 24th, Kim said on his social media (SNS), "The Democratic Party is the majority opposition party. Now is the time to adopt a fighting method that suits that. We must use our overwhelming seats in the National Assembly to check the Yoon Suk-yeol administration, stop bad actions, and reprimand them," adding, "Presidential impeachment is the ultimate method, and it is possible if the majority opposition parties make a decision."
Earlier, he advocated for President Yoon's impeachment, but voices expressing doubts about its feasibility also emerged within the same party. Kim Jong-min, a Democratic Party lawmaker, said on SBS Radio, "Personally or at the Gwanghwamun rallies, one can claim and shout for it, but it is still a bit too much for lawmakers or our party to push forward."
However, Kim emphasized the necessity of impeachment citing four reasons: ▲the fighting method of the majority opposition parties ▲effective checks and balances ▲sincerity ▲preparatory steps for constitutional amendment. He said, "We propose to check the president who has abandoned the people's lives, health, and safety with the strongest means of impeachment," adding, "It will be a powerful tool to strongly demand the international maritime law court lawsuit that we have been shouting for so long."
He also stressed, "The Democratic Party has promised to do everything to stop the discharge of Fukushima nuclear power plant contaminated water. However, the reality is that many people still view the Democratic Party's promises with suspicion," emphasizing, "We must show sincerity to the people."
He also stressed that impeachment is necessary for the constitutional amendment to a four-year renewable term. Kim said, "Starting with changing the president's term to a four-year renewable term, much discussion is needed on measures to make the impeachment system ultimately decided by a national referendum rather than the Constitutional Court," adding, "Even if the impeachment motion against President Yoon is not passed in the 21st National Assembly, it can be an important opportunity to create the 22nd constitutional amendment National Assembly."
