When a professional athlete belonging to the Gwangju Metropolitan City Buk-gu team was sentenced to prison for a sex crime, the affiliated institution, Buk-gu, took measures to prevent recurrence.
On the 22nd, Buk-gu issued a statement announcing that it would accept the measures proposed by nine female members of the Buk-gu Council and prepare measures to prevent recurrence.
Earlier, Buk-gu had processed athlete A, who committed a sex crime, as 'resigned' on the 31st of last month and paid about 18 million won in retirement benefits and other fees earlier this month, causing controversy.
A was reported to have resigned from Buk-gu, the affiliated institution, citing 'caring for his mother’s illness' as the reason.
However, A was indicted on charges of sexually assaulting a woman in her 20s whom he met at a bar in July last year, was awaiting sentencing, and was sentenced to 3 years and 6 months in prison after the charges were confirmed.
Buk-gu stated that since A, a fixed-term worker, was not subject to 'institutional notification' by investigative agencies, they could not know about the investigation and trial unless he voluntarily disclosed it.
Accordingly, Buk-gu decided to conduct criminal background checks when hiring or reappointing athletes and add a mandatory clause in the employment contract stating that the employee must notify the district office if any civil or criminal issues arise.
In addition, Buk-gu will invite external experts quarterly to conduct sexual violence prevention education, and for A, who committed a sex crime and received retirement benefits, they will consider reducing or reclaiming the retirement benefits and applying disciplinary actions.
A Buk-gu official said, "We will take this incident as an opportunity to reform the operation of the workplace sports team and review the management and supervision of the athletes."
