Kookmin University (President Lim Hong-jae) Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation announced that it held the award ceremony for the '2023 First Half Graduate Student Thesis-Based Intellectual Property Creation Support Program Contest' on the 18th at the Kookmin University Industry-Academic Cooperation Building.

This contest, established to intellectualize excellent research achievements of graduate students in the leading fields of the 4th Industrial Revolution innovation and further enhance national competitiveness through technology commercialization, was hosted by the Kookmin University Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation and sponsored by the BK21 (Phase 4) Project Group and LINC 3.0 Project Group, marking its 5th edition.

In this contest, the grand prize was awarded to student Lee Sang-yeop (Graduate School of Automotive Engineering, supervised by Professor Yoo Jin-woo) for his thesis titled "Variable Adaptation Rate-Based Lateral Dynamics Control Strategy of In-Wheel Motor Vehicles." The thesis presented a new motion control technology with ease of implementation that automatically adapts to parameters with variability depending on driving conditions. The thesis was highly praised by the judges as it could be a suitable methodology to compensate for vehicle roll phenomena and is expected to be utilized as a torque compensation method for electric vehicle in-wheel motors. Lee Sang-yeop, the grand prize winner, will receive a certificate and prize money (2 million KRW) in the name of the president, along with full support for domestic patent application costs.

The Excellence Award was given to Oh Tae-young (Graduate School of Automotive Engineering, supervised by Professor Yoo Jin-woo) for the thesis "Development of a Real Vehicle Simulation (VILS) Platform for Autonomous Driving System Development and Verification," and the Merit Award went to Lim Seul-gi (Department of Food and Nutrition, supervised by Professor Jang Yoon-ji) and Lee Hu-gyeong (Graduate School of Automotive Engineering, supervised by Professor Yoo Jin-woo).

All awardees, who received high evaluations in terms of technology rights and marketability, will be supported with certificates, prize money, and patent application costs. Furthermore, they will receive follow-up support such as patent design and technology marketing linked to related projects like intellectual property creation and utilization support projects.

Lee Sang-yeop (Graduate School of Automotive Engineering, supervised by Professor Yoo Jin-woo), the grand prize winner, expressed his gratitude, saying, "I thank Professor Yoo Jin-woo for his full support of my research," and added, "I will continue follow-up research to produce more practical and innovative results."

Oh Ha-ryeong, Vice President of Industry-Academic Research at Kookmin University (Director of LINC 3.0 Project Group), said, "I am pleased to encounter various ideas and high-quality theses from graduate students through this contest," and added, "We will seek various school-level support measures to create an environment where graduate students can focus on research and develop their own competitiveness."
