The police have applied rape-murder charges to Choi (30, male), who assaulted and sexually assaulted a woman near the Gwanaksan Dulle-gil trail in broad daylight.
On the 20th, the Seoul Gwanak Police Station changed the charges against Choi, who was detained on suspicion of rape and injury, to rape-murder. The penalty for rape-murder is more severe than for ordinary murder. Ordinary murder is punishable by imprisonment for at least five years, while rape-murder is punishable by death or life imprisonment.
The police changed Choi's charges reflecting that the victim, a woman in her 30s identified as A, passed away at a hospital at around 3:40 p.m. on the 19th. Choi is suspected of assaulting A with a blunt weapon and then raping her on the morning of the 17th at around 11:40 a.m. on a mountain trail in Sillim-dong, Gwanak-gu, Seoul. It has been confirmed that Choi and A did not know each other. Meanwhile, an autopsy on A is scheduled to be conducted by the National Forensic Service on the 21st.
