Jung-gu, Seoul, Invites About 30 Residents to the Seosomun Sacred Site History Museum in Jungnim-dong for an Introductory Exhibition Tour and Facility Exploration
Jung-gu, Seoul (Mayor Kim Gil-seong) invited about 30 residents to the Seosomun Sacred Site History Museum in Jungnim-dong on the 17th for an exhibition tour and facility exploration.
The residents listened to the guide’s explanations while viewing the museum’s special and permanent exhibitions. They also toured special spaces throughout the museum that embody the history, culture, and social aspects of Seosomun, including Sky Plaza, the Consolation Hall, and exhibition rooms.
The residents who participated in the event responded enthusiastically. They said, “I didn’t know such a great place existed even though I live nearby,” “It’s a place where the whole family can enjoy not only the museum and library but also the outdoor park,” and “I thought it was a place only for Catholic believers, but I was able to learn about late Joseon history and culture and find healing,” enjoying their visit to this urban ‘healing spot.’
The current site of the museum was known as ‘Seosomun Outer Four-way Intersection’ during the Joseon Dynasty and was a transportation hub and a bustling commercial district. Notably, this place is known as Korea’s largest Catholic martyr sacred site. Pope Francis also visited here in 2014.
To honor the history of Seosomun, Jung-gu began construction of the Seosomun History Park memorial space in 2016, and the Seosomun Sacred Site History Museum officially opened in June 2019. Shortly after opening, the museum was not widely known due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but it has since become a popular destination among citizens, attracted by the building’s grandeur and the message of ‘purification’ it conveys.
On the day of the event, Mayor Kim Gil-seong of Jung-gu also toured the museum with the residents. Mayor Kim said, “I regret not visiting this wonderful space sooner,” and added, “I hope today’s reflection on the history of the Seosomun Sacred Site provided a time to purify your hearts and deepen your affection for the community.”
