Emergency Jamboree Countermeasure Meeting Held on the 8th, Presided Over by Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon District
"I was tired and exhausted, but I was healed after coming here! Since coming to Nowon, I have been enjoying myself to the fullest," said Ms. Rosaria, who experienced forest foot baths and forest walks at Bulamsan Forest Healing Center on the first day of the schedule on the 9th, expressing satisfaction with the programs provided by the district.
On the 8th, the district received an urgent "2023 Saemangeum World Scout Jamboree Cooperation Request" from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and Seoul City, and proceeded with accommodation and meal provision, safety management, and experience program implementation. As a national event, the public, private, military, and police sectors united to respond swiftly to the government's request to provide wonderful memories for the worldwide participants visiting the district.
First, on the 8th, the district immediately held an emergency countermeasure meeting chaired by Mayor Oh Seung-rok to organize detailed matters such as available facilities and institutions, interpretation, and transportation. The schedule was fully packed for three days with active cooperation from seven district-affiliated institutions including Chosansan Pottery Experience Center, Bulamsan Together Forest, Nowon Culture and Arts Center, Nowon Astronomy and Space Science Museum, four municipal institutions in the area such as Nowon Youth Center and Buk Seoul Museum of Art, and local universities including Korea Military Academy, Kwangwoon University, and Dongcheon Academy.
Above all, the active support of district office staff shone brightly. Support personnel were gathered mainly in categories of ▲guidance ▲interpretation ▲vehicle support ▲duty ▲situation room, resulting in a total of 73 staff members including 32 guides and 17 interpreters providing on-site support. Most staff came to work early in the morning and left late at night, working far beyond their regular hours without regard to day or night.
Officer Kim Su-yeon, who participated in guidance on the first day, arrived at Korea Military Academy at 7 a.m. and led 44 participants throughout the day. She managed all schedules including Bulamsan Healing Town, Together Forest, Hwarangdae Railroad Park, lunch, dinner, and late-night snacks, staying until after 10 p.m. Kim said, "The participants looked very tired when I first met them, but as the programs continued, I saw them regain vitality and satisfaction. Before I knew it, I was enjoying the situation with them and felt a sense of accomplishment."
Officer Lee Kyu-won, who participated in English interpretation over the second and third days, introduced participants to skating experiences, Kim Deok-su's Samulnori performance, and Korea Military Academy experiences. While maintaining his regular duties, he studied scenarios after work to effectively convey Korean culture, which was new to the participants. Lee said, "I was initially flustered by the sudden interpretation task, but I was grateful and felt rewarded by the participants who communicated brightly despite my clumsy interpretation."
Officer Lee Han-sol, who was on duty on the third day, worked from 6 p.m. until noon the next day, personally seeing off the departing Jamboree participants. Lee said, "Fortunately, the Jamboree schedule ended well without major incidents or accidents. Although the overnight duty was tiring, I think it was a once-in-a-lifetime good experience, and I felt proud seeing the participants leave Nowon-gu with bright faces."
Additionally, the district prepared alternative meals at every meal for participants who were vegetarians. For participants who could not eat dinner at all due to gluten hypersensitivity, Officer Kang Shin-woo personally grilled raw meat at a restaurant and delivered it. An emergency medical team was also separately organized to accompany the schedule and provide emergency treatment for injuries.
The local community also willingly provided support. Seoul Gwangyeom Church (Pastor Jo Hyun-sam) organized a volunteer group of about 30 people to provide breakfast for about 450 participants and related personnel for three days. Makamoye Bread Bar (located in Gongneung-dong, Nowon-gu) provided bread as snacks, and the National and Public Daycare Center Association (President Han Jeong-hee) supported beverages.
Supporting these activities were public relations officers Jeong Eun-seon, Lee Hyun-joo, and Kim Seon-gyeong from the Media Public Relations Office (Director Jang Ju-hyun, Press Team Leader Jeong Yoon-kyung). They arrived at Korea Military Academy around 6:30 a.m. and worked late into the evening to cover activities and prepare press releases for the media.
Nowon-gu’s publicity system has been established since the 4th elected term and is famous for its enthusiastic promotion of district administration even in normal times, which shone even more during this major event.
Mayor Oh Seung-rok of Nowon-gu said, "We successfully held a national event through the collaboration of the district and local community. I thank all related organizations and residents who helped, and especially appreciate the hard work of the staff who worked day and night. I hope all Jamboree participants remember their time in Nowon-gu as a happy memory."
