Haewido Island is the hometown of the late President Kim Dae-jung, and since his passing, a memorial service has been held annually to reflect on and carry forward the values of democracy, human rights, and peace that the President emphasized during his lifetime.
In his memorial address, Governor Park Woo-ryang said, “In the midst of ongoing conflicts such as the war between Ukraine and Russia, economic rivalry between the United States and China, and Japan’s discharge of contaminated water, the world situation is unstable, making us miss President Kim Dae-jung, who took the lead in world peace, even more. We will strive to continue the spirit and stature left by the President.”
Meanwhile, Shinan-gun plans to inherit the values of democracy, human rights, and peace emphasized by the late President Kim Dae-jung by establishing the Korean Political Figures Photo Museum on Haewido Island and the East Asian Human Rights and Peace Art Museum on Sinui Island, connected by the Samdo Bridge, aiming to make the three Haewi Islands a sanctuary of peace.
