Among residents of Seoul's jjokbangchon, 37.4% live in Dongja-dong, Galwol-dong, and Huam-dong. The total number of jjokbang rooms in the area reaches 1,267.
Yongsan-gu (District Mayor Park Hee-young) will strengthen disinfection and pest control in 65 jjokbang buildings over four months from June to September.
The purpose is to protect jjokbang residents from infectious diseases caused by mosquitoes, cockroaches, and other pests. Jjokbangchon rooms are vulnerable to infections as they typically measure between 0.5 to 2 pyeong (approximately 1.65 to 6.6 square meters) and lack facilities such as toilets and washrooms.
On the morning of the 16th, Park Hee-young, Mayor of Yongsan-gu, visited the jjokbangchon disinfection site. Mayor Park encouraged the disinfection workers and then moved to Haetteuneunjip (a jjokbang building). After disinfecting the corridors and applying mosquito larvicide to the toilets in the shared restrooms, he proceeded with fogging the streets.
Mayor Park stated, “Due to poor ventilation, jjokbangchon inevitably has more mosquitoes than other areas. The efforts of the disinfection workers will greatly help in eradicating mosquitoes in jjokbangchon.”
The district conducts corridor disinfection inside jjokbang buildings every Wednesday by spraying harmless chemicals and wiping them down, while fogging on side streets is performed using vehicle-mounted foggers.
Cockroach control is carried out in cooperation with the Seoul Yongsan Regional Self-Support Center. Last month, professional personnel (holding a Level 1 Pest Control Manager certification) installed cockroach bait traps inside jjokbang buildings.
Separate guidelines on personal hygiene practices for living environment sanitation and infectious disease prevention are also provided. If households at risk due to heatwaves are identified during disinfection, they are connected to relevant departments.
Disinfection for COVID-19 in jjokbangchon is managed by the jjokbang counseling center. Personal protective equipment such as masks and disinfectants can be obtained from Ongichanggo (3-14 Huam-ro 37-gil) if needed.
Ongichanggo is a jjokbangchon-specialized food market where residents can autonomously take daily necessities within their allocated credit limits without having to wait in long lines.
Park Hee-young, Mayor of Yongsan-gu, said, “We will focus on eradicating pests that thrive during the hot summer. If the unbearable heat continues in jjokbang, please make use of heat relief shelters and safe accommodations.”
