Illuminated by LED Lights at Night to Energize Teheran-ro’s Night Streets... Branding Taekwondo and Gukkiwon as Historical and Cultural Assets of Gangnam
Gangnam-gu (Mayor Jo Seong-myeong) completed the installation of 11 sculptures inspired by Taekwondo poomsae along the central road of Teheran-ro near the Gukkiwon intersection at the end of last month.
Last year, the district promoted a project to create landmarks along Teheran-ro, targeting the area from Gukkiwon intersection to the Yeoksam Cultural Park walking trail, and operated a public-private governance workshop.
The workshop highlighted that many domestic and international visitors were unaware of Gukkiwon’s presence on Gangnam’s Teheran-ro. By installing stylish Taekwondo sculptures that harmonize with Gangnam’s urban image, the district aims to widely promote Gukkiwon and Taekwondo as historical and cultural assets of Gangnam.
The 11 sculptures, ranging from 2.9 to 4.2 meters in height, embody dynamic Taekwondo poomsae movements. Five sculptures installed from Gukkiwon intersection toward Yeoksam Station represent continuous motions of the Taekwondo technique “dolgyechagi” (spinning kick). Six sculptures, three each installed from Gukkiwon intersection and toward Gangnam Station, depict single Taekwondo moves of “balchagi” (kick) and “makgi” (block) poses. At night, the sculptures shine with internal LED lighting. The brightly illuminated sculptures emphasize dynamic postures and are expected to invigorate the night streets of Teheran-ro.
Jo Seong-myeong, Mayor of Gangnam-gu, said, “We installed Taekwondo sculptures on Teheran-ro to brand the traditional martial art as a tourism resource of Gangnam,” adding, “We will continue to promote various projects to revitalize many landmarks in Gangnam.”
