July 7-9 at BEXCO, Over 1,000 Visitors Participate
Busan Library successfully concluded the operation of the exhibition and experience booth for books for the disabled at BEXCO, where the ‘2023 Busan World Disabled Persons Festival’ was held from the 7th to the 9th.
The ‘2023 Busan World Disabled Persons Festival’ is a five-day global celebration of disabled persons, taking place at BEXCO from August 7 to August 11, with over 2,700 participants from 54 countries.
Busan Library originally planned to operate the exhibition and experience booth for books for the disabled until August 10, but due to the impact of Typhoon Khanun, it was closed a day earlier on August 9.
The exhibition and experience booth was composed of various interactive programs tailored to the perspective of disabled persons, as well as an open bookstore stocked with braille and regular books.
The experience programs included a variety of activities suited to the needs of disabled persons, such as ▲coloring picture puzzles and ▲stamping pouches, with about 1,000 participants taking part in the programs.
The ‘Open Bookstore’ was stocked with ▲braille leaflets, ▲braille booklets introducing recommended braille books, ▲braille books, and ▲160 high-quality books of collectible value, allowing all citizens, including disabled persons, to comfortably read books.
The booth’s background featured realistic images of the Haeundae and Gwangalli seas, creating an atmosphere of reading books by the Busan sea.
Additionally, free books were provided as souvenirs to citizens using the booth, greatly contributing to the cultivation of a reading culture among the public.
Kang Eun-hee, Director of Busan Library, said, “We are very honored that Busan Library could participate alongside the global disabled community through the operation of this exhibition and experience booth for books for the disabled,” adding, “We hope this will serve as a small step toward spreading empathy and awareness for disabled persons.”
Earlier this year, Busan Library held a poetry and painting exhibition by persons with mental disabilities, which was viewed by 1,584 citizens. In the second half of the year, the library plans to offer braille education and reading culture programs for disabled persons, as well as various programs aimed at promoting library use by disabled persons and spreading empathy and awareness toward them.
