Southeast Asia Tour: "China's Development is the Growth of Peaceful Power"
Wang Yi, Director of the Central Foreign Affairs Office of the Chinese Communist Party and Minister of Foreign Affairs, took active measures to check the United States during his Southeast Asia tour.
According to the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the 11th, Commissioner Wang met with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in Singapore and said, "The United States does not want to see the development of emerging countries such as China because it wants to maintain unipolar hegemony." He added, "On one hand, it encourages and supports the 'Taiwan independence' forces to seek independence by relying on the United States, hitting China's red line; on the other hand, it removes the mask of fair competition and forces other countries to engage in unilateral protectionism against China."
He continued, "Such regression only damages its own prestige and proves to the world that the United States is the greatest source of instability today."
Commissioner Wang said, "China's development is the growth of peaceful power and the enhancement of stable factors," adding, "It will bring long-lasting bonuses and development opportunities to countries around the world, especially neighboring countries."
In response, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said, "Today's world is by no means peaceful, so major powers must play a leading role in pursuing mutual benefit and win-win cooperation," and "Singapore supports ASEAN and China deepening cooperation and jointly safeguarding regional peaceful development."
Prime Minister Lee also said, "The precious legacy left by former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew is that he laid a solid foundation for the development of bilateral relations together with previous Chinese leaders," adding, "We will forever cherish his important teachings and continue the friendship between Singapore and China."
On the same day, Commissioner Wang also met with Lawrence Wong, Singapore's First Deputy Prime Minister, saying, "In today's chaotic world, the only right path is to jointly uphold the international order based on the United Nations-centered international system and international law," and "Major powers should set a better example."
Deputy Prime Minister Wong responded, "Currently, the relationship between Singapore and China is developing strongly, and the achievements of jointly building the Belt and Road Initiative (一帶一路: the land and maritime Silk Road connecting China, Central Asia, and Europe) are abundant," adding, "Singapore opposes the 'law of the jungle' and power politics, and will jointly uphold regional peace, stability, and World Trade Organization (WTO) rules."
Commissioner Wang chose Singapore, Malaysia, and Cambodia?three ASEAN countries?as the first destinations for his tour since returning as Foreign Minister. The tour will conclude on the 13th.
