‘Hinnamno’ to ‘Kanun’? ... YouTuber Arrested for Spreading Fake Video Altering Typhoon Name

A YouTuber was recently booked for falsely broadcasting footage of Typhoon Hinnamnor, which caused significant damage in Busan last September, as if it were the recently landed Typhoon Khanun.

On the 11th, the Haeundae Police Station in Busan announced that YouTuber A was booked on charges of violating Article 47-2 of the Telecommunications Business Act.

According to the police, on the morning of the 10th, A is suspected of broadcasting footage of Typhoon Hinnamnor near Marine City in Haeundae on YouTube, pretending it was Khanun, causing fear and anxiety among an unspecified number of viewers.

At the time, A reportedly attempted to enter the beach area after a viewer requested a live broadcast of the typhoon situation, but was stopped for safety reasons and then played footage of last year's Hinnamnor typhoon.

A deceived viewers by presenting footage of waves from Typhoon Hinnamnor last year overtopping the Marine City breakwater and flooding shops as if it were Typhoon Khanun.

The video also clearly showed the names of shops that suffered damage last year. The owner of one such shop said, "It's simply absurd," and added, "Because it was depicted as if we were damaged by the typhoon, our sales have decreased. The YouTuber must be punished."

A, who has 190,000 subscribers, reportedly received donations after uploading the broadcast. Although the exact amount is unknown, the video suggests that about 700,000 KRW was donated.

Some media outlets initially reported on YouTube and online articles that coastal flooding occurred at Marine City in Haeundae based on this video, causing significant damage, but later deleted these reports.

The Haeundae District Office stated that it is considering filing a complaint, viewing the YouTuber's false broadcast as an obstruction of official duties.
