An employee at the Jinlye Corporate Finance Branch protected the assets of a customer surnamed Seo (in his 70s, male) who was about to withdraw 58 million KRW after being deceived by a voice phishing scam last month.

Previously, the customer Seo had visited the branch after terminating a fixed deposit at another bank and transferring the funds to BNK Gyeongnam Bank.

The employee at the Jinlye Corporate Finance Branch recognized the situation and became suspicious of the customer's urgent attempt to withdraw a large amount of cash.

After hearing from customer Seo that a voice phishing scammer impersonating an inspector told him he was involved in a crime and that withdrawing the entire deposit in cash and keeping it at home would help him avoid arrest, the employee promptly froze the payment and reported the case to the nearest police station.

Kim Kyun, chief of the Gimhae Seobu Police Station, stated, “Since it is difficult to recover the funds even if the suspect is apprehended in voice phishing cases, active interest and reporting by financial institution personnel before damage occurs are crucial.”

Earlier last month, an employee at the Sanho-dong Branch of BNK Gyeongnam Bank also received a certificate of appreciation from the Masan Dongbu Police Station for preventing voice phishing.
