The county holds the Uiryeong Local Food Cooking Contest annually to promote the excellence of Uiryeong’s local cuisine and to discover and commercialize various recipes using Uiryeong’s agricultural specialties as main ingredients that can be sold in the food service industry.
At last year’s contest, ‘Manggae Kkotdorak,’ which cooked rice using Uiryeong specialty Manggae leaves and shiitake mushrooms, and served dishes with Uiryeong Hanwoo beef, quail eggs, tteokgalbi, and egg side dishes, attracted great attention. Not using salted Manggae leaves but fresh (raw) Manggae leaves for cooking rice, ‘Manggae Kkotdorak’ won the grand prize by capturing not only popularity but also taste and nutrition, and it is still remembered as the ‘taste of heaven’ that best represents the flavor of Uiryeong.

The contest, to be held on October 7 at the main stage of Seodong Life Park during the 2023 Uiryeong Rich Rich Festival, has the theme ‘Rich Food, Setting the Table,’ and participants must submit one main dish using Uiryeong’s agricultural specialties presented as a full table setting.
Anyone residing in the Republic of Korea can participate, and applications can be submitted by mail, visit, or online by downloading the form from the county website by the 31st. After document screening, 20 teams will be selected to advance to the finals.

The finals will be held in an audition competition format, evaluating the completeness, professionalism, and popularity of the dishes to assess the potential of local representative cuisine, with awards given accordingly. The total prize money is 12 million KRW, with the grand prize winner receiving the Governor of Gyeongsangnam-do Award and 1.8 million KRW.
A county official said, “Through this nationwide cooking contest, we aim to promote the county’s agricultural specialties and discover and popularize representative local tourism foods, achieving two goals at once.”
