Police Officer Caught Drunk Driving by Citizen Report, Fined 8 Million Won

An on-duty police officer who caused a single-vehicle accident while driving under the influence has been fined.

According to the legal community on the 8th, the Gwangju District Court issued a summary order imposing a fine of 8 million won on Sergeant A, affiliated with the Gwangju Dongbu Police Station, who was prosecuted for drunk driving under the Road Traffic Act.

The summary order was finalized as Sergeant A did not request a formal trial.

Sergeant A was summarily indicted for causing an accident by hitting a curb while driving under the influence near Jinwol-dong, Nam-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City in March.

At the time, Sergeant A's blood alcohol concentration was well above the level for license cancellation.

The crime was uncovered following a citizen's report that the vehicle was swerving on the road.

Meanwhile, the police held a disciplinary committee and imposed a severe demotion on Sergeant A. He previously served as a lieutenant at Gwangsan Police Station and is currently serving as a sergeant at Dongbu Police Station.
