Offering a Unique Experience Where Light and Sound Become One
The newly introduced ‘Jinju M2 Festival,’ which combined water content using media and water with EDM sounds, heated up Namgang River in Jinju with over 10,000 participants over three days from the 4th to the 6th of this year.
The M2 Festival is Jinju City’s representative summer festival held on the water, set against the backdrop of the beautiful Namgang River and Chokseokru Pavilion, which are proud symbols of Jinju.
Especially this year, to differentiate from music festivals held in other cities, the existing Jinju Music Festival was fused with visual media to clearly define the target audience and identity.
As a result, more teenagers and people in their twenties participated than in previous years, responding that they ‘had a great time,’ which is evaluated as having fully served its role as a dynamic summer festival.
The core of this year’s event, the music & media convergence performance, began with the Gyeongnam Gugak Orchestra’s performance titled ‘Drawing Lee Sung-ja,’ inspired by the works of Lee Sung-ja, an artist from Jinju who developed a unique artistic world while traveling between Korea and France.
Following this, the opening ceremony featured ‘Jinju Moksa Opens the Gates of Light,’ a media-converged performance that declared the upgrade of the music festival to the M2 Festival.
On the final day, the 6th, performances such as media daebuk & percussion, street dance, traditional dance & Bukku dance, fusion gugak combined with media delighted the eyes and ears in ‘Showing Jinju’s Hope,’ and the gala concert ‘Giving Jinju’s Hope’ by Harmonize, a two-time world choir competition winner, received praise for vividly expressing Jinju City’s unique colors.
In particular, these performances were conducted as interactive shows where the actions of performers on stage, music, and media interacted, creating a sweet yet fantastic atmosphere like a midsummer night’s dream, earning enthusiastic responses from visitors to the festival.
The final convergence performance of the festival, ‘Hopeful Body Dialogue,’ was an ambitiously prepared program targeting the tastes of the MZ generation, presented as an interactive performance linked with EDM. Through media interacting with the DJ’s actions alongside exciting electronic music, it received especially great love from the MZ generation attending the event.
After the water stage performances ended, a media art show using screen LED videos linked with Jinju Fortress, lasers, special lighting, and LED flying board shows beautifully decorated Namgang River on a midsummer night, creating a spectacular scene that marked the grand finale of the festival.
The media art show showcased a beautiful nightscape utilizing Jinju’s unique assets, Jinju Fortress and Namgang River, and is expected to contribute to the creation of a special nighttime tourism ecosystem as a stay-type tourism city.
A city official said, “In line with the reputation of a world festival city and a specialized nighttime tourism city, this year’s ‘Jinju M2 Festival’ has been upgraded to a new level,” adding, “Through the harmony of Namgang River, Jinju Fortress, water, light, and music, we will strive to make it a summer festival representing new stay-type nighttime tourism and contribute to revitalizing the local economy.”
