Kookmin University (President Im Hong-jae) LINC 3.0 Project Group announced that it held the award ceremony for the 2023 Capstone Design Idea Competition on the 2nd.
The competition was hosted by Kookmin University LINC 3.0 Project Group to disseminate the achievements of the capstone design projects conducted in the first semester of the 2023 academic year. A total of 41 teams from various majors including engineering, natural sciences, humanities and social sciences, and arts and physical education participated.
The most eye-catching item in this competition was the manual wheelchair improved to overcome curbs, created by the 'Chairmen' team (Jung Kyung-jin, Jeon Ju-hyeong, Kim Kang-hyeok, Kim Min-gi, Seo Hyun-beom, Kim Junho), which won the grand prize. The Chairmen team applied a 3-axis system connected by a lever, central axis, and wheel axis to enable wheelchair users to independently overcome curbs of certain heights, improving the wheelchair's mobility. This work received excellent evaluations from the judges for being easy to process and manufacture, having a low risk of malfunction, and high commercialization potential considering production costs.
The teams ‘Mechanical Museum’ (Choi Jong-beom, Shim Young-su, Yoon Joon-seop, Kim Seung-chan, Kim Young-bin, Hwang Da-kyo) and ‘Seungjin’ (Jung Seung-eun, Jo Ye-jin), which won the excellence awards, also attracted attention with their good ideas. The ‘Mechanical Museum’ team developed an autonomous delivery robot equipped with gimbal and locking functions by using Arduino and a gyro sensor for the gimbal function and implementing a solenoid locking device with Arduino. The ‘Seungjin’ team developed an algorithm that extracts visual information by combining facial and expression recognition technology to help visually impaired people understand nonverbal facial expressions and gestures. Through this, they created a system (Emo-Vision AI) that conveys information to visually impaired people using vibration functions, receiving favorable evaluations.
Capstone Design is a practical convergence education program where students solve industrial and community issues based on the major knowledge learned in their first and second years. Kookmin University LINC 3.0 Project Group supports project execution so that students can cultivate creativity, practical skills, and teamwork based on comprehensive problem-solving in this program.
Oh Ha-ryeong, Vice President of Industry-Academia Research and Director of Kookmin University LINC 3.0 Project Group, said, “It is very encouraging that the creativity and feasibility of various ideas from students participating in the Capstone Design Competition are increasing every year,” and added, “We will actively support the creative and challenging excellent works discovered through the competition to be linked to technology transfer and commercialization.”
