Hyosung Corporation is starting technology development to target the eco-friendly future ship market in collaboration with the Korea Marine Equipment Research Institute (KOMERI).
Hyosung announced on the 4th that it has signed an MOU with KOMERI to develop power conversion devices for electric propulsion ships. Through this MOU, both companies will cooperate to develop MW-class large-capacity power conversion devices (drives, converters) required for the "Development Project of Core Technologies for the Entire Life Cycle of Eco-friendly Ships," led by the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
Hyosung will be responsible for developing a 3MW-class large-capacity drive for ship propulsion with a modular parallel structure and a 1MW-class large-capacity converter for ESS, enabling installation on various hybrid electric propulsion ships. Through collaboration with KOMERI, Hyosung plans to secure global-level technological capabilities in the fields of drives and converters for eco-friendly hybrid electric propulsion ships.
Choi Won-ho, head of Hyosung Heavy Industries Research Institute, stated, "Through this MOU, we will secure competitiveness in the domestic eco-friendly ship electric propulsion system sector and do our best to ensure that Hyosung Heavy Industries' diverse product lineup can be utilized in the marine industry."
Meanwhile, Hyosung has secured proprietary technology through continuous R&D investment based on the technology management philosophy passed down from its founder to Chairman Cho Hyun-joon. Following this philosophy, Hyosung established the first private company research institute in Korea in 1971 and later founded the Heavy Industries Research Institute in 1978.
