Giantstep Wins Red Dot Design Award Grand Prize for Media Art Participation Exhibition 'Seoul Light DDP'

Real-time content solution company Giantstep announced on the 3rd that ‘Seoul Light DDP,’ in which it participated, won the main prize as the only domestic light festival at the ‘Red Dot Design Award 2023.’

The Red Dot Design Award is an international design competition hosted by the Design Center of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Along with Germany’s ‘iF Design Award’ and the United States’ ‘IDEA Design Award,’ it is considered one of the world’s top three design awards. Every year, innovative designs are selected and awarded in three categories: ▲Product Design ▲Brand & Communication Design ▲Design Concept. ‘Seoul Light DDP,’ which Giantstep participated in, won the main prize in the Brand & Communication Design category at the Red Dot Design Award.

‘Seoul Light DDP’ is a festival that projects videos onto the entire outer wall of Dongdaemun Design Plaza (hereafter DDP) to showcase various content, held twice in autumn and winter. It is a large-scale media art exhibition project that started in 2019 and is a global event attracting up to one million visitors.

Giantstep participated as the main artist in ‘Seoul Light DDP’ in 2022 and presented diverse media art works under the theme ‘Designing Life at the Universe,’ inspired by the DDP’s exterior shape, which is likened to a spaceship landed in the city.

At the ‘Seoul Light DDP 2022 Autumn’ exhibition held in October 2022, Giantstep showcased virtual fashion media art technology through the virtual character ‘Cosmo Walker.’ To create this character, Giantstep used motion capture technology to apply the walking information of a real model to the virtual character. Additionally, the 3D character’s clothing was created using the ‘Marvelous Designer’ tool to realistically implement the physical properties of the garments, and the spacesuit design was conceived based on the core principles of sustainability, ‘harmony and coexistence.’

In December 2022, Giantstep also participated in ‘Rendez-Vous,’ the main media art piece of the ‘Seoul Light DDP 2022’ main event. ‘Rendez-Vous,’ meaning ‘meeting’ in French, is also used in aerospace terminology to describe the event of satellites or spacecraft meeting in outer space. Other artists besides Giantstep participated, presenting large-scale media art works themed on ‘transcendence,’ ‘circulation,’ and ‘innocence.’

Among these works, Giantstep’s ‘Beginning of the Journey’ opened the starting point of the full-fledged space journey. This piece actively utilized the organic, curved exterior structure of DDP and conveyed the charm of a journey freely crossing beyond the concepts of time and space in the universe, a space of infinite possibilities.
