Sancheong-gun, Remarkable Achievements in Local Waterworks Modernization Project

Sancheong-gun, Gyeongnam Province, has reduced water leakage by approximately 979,000 tons over one year and saved 3.3 billion KRW in production costs through the local water supply modernization project.

According to Sancheong-gun on the 2nd, the "Sancheong-gun Local Water Supply Modernization Project," which was promoted through a consignment agreement with the Korea Environment Corporation in October 2016, received a passing evaluation from the Performance Evaluation Committee of the Korea Water and Wastewater Works Association under the Ministry of Environment.

In particular, the existing water service rate of 53.7% was found to have increased by 34.78 percentage points to 88.48%.

The Sancheong-gun Local Water Supply Modernization Project was promoted to support the supply of safe tap water by replacing aging water supply facilities to prevent rust and foreign substance inflow caused by deteriorated pipelines.

Through maintenance management system tasks and leakage detection services, minimum nighttime flow, step tests, and acoustic surveys were conducted to locate leak points for leakage repair and pipeline replacement.

The project invested a total of 25.1 billion KRW to divide the entire Sancheong-gun area into 16 small blocks and establish block systems.

New water supply zones were established in Saengcho, Sancheong, Danseong, and Jungchon, and 45.4 km of aging pipelines were replaced.

Leak repairs were carried out at 320 locations, 3,144 old water meters were replaced, and 1,709 meter protection boxes were also replaced.

To reduce leakage caused by water pressure variations, 11 pressure reduction facilities and 5 booster facilities were newly installed, and flow monitoring facilities are currently being installed and operated.

Through these efforts, achievements such as leakage reduction, drought response, and water management efficiency were realized.

In particular, water leakage was reduced by approximately 979,000 tons over one year, and annual production costs were reduced by 3.3 billion KRW.

Sancheong-gun expects this project to contribute to improving water welfare for residents and to carbon neutrality policies.

County Governor Lee Seung-hwa said, “The successful achievement of the goals has become an opportunity to take a step closer to realizing water welfare where all Sancheong residents can use clean and stable tap water,” and added, “We will make further efforts to maintain the results created by the active cooperation of Sancheong-gun and the technical capabilities of the Korea Environment Corporation.”
