Gyeonggi Housing and Urban Corporation (GH) has selected the 'Connected Field' by the Sia Plan Architects Consortium as the winning design in the international design competition for the Gwanggyo Central Plaza in Suwon.
Following the selection of the winning design, GH will proceed with the basic and detailed design of the Gwanggyo Central Plaza and begin construction in 2025.
The central plaza will be a three-dimensional space combining an underground cultural area and an above-ground plaza, spanning from two basement levels to the first floor above ground, with a total floor area of 12,655 square meters.
The awarded 'Connected Field' design is recognized for its unique spatial characteristics realized through a canopy structure, offering excellent vertical and horizontal circulation.
Niall Kirkwood, professor at Harvard University and chair of the judging panel, praised the project as "a work that stands out for its flexible response within the urban context through a three-dimensional, variable canopy."
Kim Se-yong, president of GH, emphasized, "The creation of the Gwanggyo Central Plaza is the finishing touch project for the final completion of Gwanggyo New Town," adding, "Based on the outstanding winning design, we will create a representative space in Gyeonggi Province where culture, arts, and leisure become part of everyday life."
