Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do, has confirmed a total of approximately 2.217 billion KRW in restoration funds for farms damaged by the heavy rains in May.

The restoration funds will be reflected in the second supplementary budget scheduled for September and will be directly paid to the farms.

According to the county on the 31st, the heavy rains from May 4 to 6 caused damage to a total of 2,418.3 hectares, including 1,434 hectares of barley, wheat, and oats, 157 hectares of garlic, and 8 hectares of other vegetable crops, resulting in lodging and flooding damage.

The restoration funds will include approximately 1.885 billion KRW from national and provincial budgets and about 332 million KRW from the county budget to support pesticide costs.

The confirmed restoration funds are supported by the national treasury for disaster indices of 300 or higher, while for minor damages with a disaster index below 300, Haenam-gun is considering support through its own budget. The disaster index is calculated based on the damaged area of crops and the support standard index for each crop.

In addition, as natural disasters are becoming more frequent due to climate change, the county supports 90% of the subscription fee for crop disaster insurance that protects farmers' income in case of disaster damage.

A county official stated, “As more disasters are expected to occur due to the effects of climate change, we hope farmers will proactively subscribe to disaster insurance. The county will also make every effort to support restoration in the event of disasters.”
