Fire Authorities "No Damage Reports So Far"
The Third Largest Earthquake This Year
An earthquake measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale occurred in Jangsu, Jeonbuk, and reports of tremors were also received from neighboring cities and counties.
The Jeonbuk Fire Headquarters announced that at around 7:07 PM on the 29th, an earthquake measuring 3.5 occurred 17 km north of Jangsu-gun (Cheoncheon-myeon), and 39 earthquake detection reports were received by 119 emergency services.
Of the reports, 30 were from Jeonbuk where the earthquake occurred, and reports were also received from nearby regions including 4 from Gyeongbuk, 2 from Gyeongnam, 1 from Chungbuk, 1 from Jeonnam, and 1 from Busan. According to the Fire Headquarters, all reports stated that people "felt the shaking," and no damage was reported.
According to Yonhap News, Kim (67), who lives about 2 km from downtown Jangsu, said in an interview, "I was sitting on the floor at home when the floor shook enough to lift my hips twice," adding, "I am anxious because I don’t know if there will be aftershocks."
Im (65), who was enjoying a summer retreat at Jinan Daemisaem Natural Recreation Forest, also expressed anxiety, saying, "I felt the tremor enough to sway my body slightly," and "I came here with my family for a trip, but I don’t know what’s going on."
Online communities have also shared experiences of feeling the earthquake. Comments included, "I felt the chair shaking and wondered what it was, then immediately received an earthquake alert message and felt relieved," "I was lying on the living room floor when it shook very strongly," and "It felt like the road was shaking as if a huge truck was passing by the crosswalk," sharing their respective situations and feelings at the time.
Jeonbuk Province is swiftly confirming any disaster-related damage and preparing for the possibility of aftershocks.
