Dobong-gu Wins Grand Prize for 'Carbon Sympathy Mileage'

Dobong-gu (Mayor Oh Eon-seok) announced that it has been honored with the Best Award for the second consecutive year at the ‘2023 National Basic Local Government Heads Manifesto Best Practice Competition,’ jointly hosted by the Korea Manifesto Practice Headquarters and the Gwangju-Jeonnam Research Institute.

Now in its 13th year, this competition is held to share and spread excellent policy cases from basic local governments nationwide. It is conducted across seven categories: ▲Job creation and employment improvement ▲Inequality reduction ▲Response to demographic changes ▲Climate and environment ▲Leading digital innovation ▲Revitalization of local culture ▲Strengthening community cooperation.

A total of 364 cases were submitted from 155 basic local governments nationwide, with 172 excellent cases advancing to the finals after the first round of judging. The second round of judging was conducted by a panel of local government experts appointed from civil society, academia, and the media, along with evaluations from participating public officials and citizen evaluation groups.

Dobong-gu received the Best Award in the climate and environment category for the case titled ‘Everyone Calls for Carbon Neutrality, but There Are No Practical Tools. Leading Resident Action with Tanso Gong(Zero)gam(Reduction) Mileage.’ The originality, resident impact, and sustainability of Dobong-gu’s unique policy, ‘Tanso Gong(Zero)gam(Reduction) Mileage,’ were highly praised.

Tanso Gonggam Mileage is an environmental mileage program independently developed by the district to respond to the climate crisis by encouraging 41 carbon-neutral activities in daily life. It is the nation’s first program to provide incentives in the form of local currency.

Since its official launch on April 3 of this year, it has received strong support from residents, surpassing 1,000 members within just two weeks. The district plans to expand the membership to 5,000 by the end of this year and continuously develop the program by adding more ways to use the mileage.

Mayor Oh Eon-seok stated, “We are pleased that Dobong-gu’s efforts in carbon neutrality policies have been recognized with this award. We will continue to strive to make Tanso Gonggam Mileage a flagship brand in responding to the climate crisis.”
