Decision at Board Meeting on 27th
In-house Developed Eco-friendly Construction Method
From Second Half of 2025
Annual Processing of 3000t and Lithium Recovery
Doosan Enerbility is entering the rapidly growing battery recycling market.
Doosan Enerbility announced on the 28th that it held a board meeting and decided to establish a subsidiary specializing in battery recycling called ‘Doosan Recycle Solution’.
In 2021, Doosan Enerbility independently developed and completed a demonstration of technology to recover lithium from used batteries. The technology developed by Doosan Enerbility involves heat-treating the internal materials of used batteries, separating lithium using distilled water, and then extracting lithium carbonate through crystallization technology. Compared to existing extraction methods, this process is simpler, more economical, and eco-friendly as it does not use chemical agents, resulting in higher lithium purity and recovery rates.
After establishing the subsidiary, Doosan Recycle Solution plans to build a commercial production facility and recover lithium by processing approximately 3,000 tons of raw materials annually starting from the second half of 2025. Doosan Recycle Solution intends to expand its business by collaborating with raw material suppliers.
The battery recycling market is rapidly growing alongside the expansion of the electric vehicle market. According to data released last year by the global market research firm SNE Research, the global battery recycling market is expected to grow more than 120 times, from about 700 billion KRW in 2023 to approximately 87 trillion KRW by 2040.
Choi Jae-hyuk, Executive Director of Strategy and Innovation at Doosan Enerbility, who has been preparing for the establishment of the new corporation, said, "We have established a subsidiary with an independent management system to seize business opportunities in the rapidly growing battery recycling market. With our competitive proprietary technology, we will accelerate business growth through faster decision-making and enhanced expertise."
