A Forum to Discuss Long-Standing Issues in the Taxi Industry
The Gurye County Council in Jeollanam-do (Chairman Yoo Si-moon) announced that it held a meeting on July 24 with taxi transportation operators and the taxi industry within Gurye County to discuss current issues and future development directions.
This meeting served as an opportunity to listen to the opinions of stakeholders on related issues such as the conflict over applying taxi business zones to the 100-won taxi and voucher taxi services for the disabled, which guarantee minimum mobility rights for village residents with poor transportation access and transportation-vulnerable groups such as the disabled, as well as the integration of business zones across the entire county, seeking clues for resolution.
Regarding the integration of taxi business zones in towns and townships, there was a consensus on the need to gradually create conditions for business zone integration through the prompt promotion of the taxi reduction project, and the council agreed to actively cooperate in securing budgets related to the reduction.
In the case of the 100-won taxi project, it was confirmed that the relevant department is promoting a project to replace paper-type tickets with card-type tickets by the end of this year to prevent misuse. Additionally, there was a consensus to promptly proceed with revising related ordinances to extend taxi vehicle age limits to alleviate the taxi industry's management difficulties through careful review.
Regarding the proposal to additionally install taxi stands in Gurye-eup, it was agreed to actively reflect this in related projects such as urban regeneration and parking lot construction. As for the issue of the Gurye business zone, which is part of the residents' living area but administratively belongs to Suncheon City, it was decided to seek solutions through reviewing relevant laws and consultations with related agencies and stakeholders.
Yoo Si-moon, chairman of the Gurye County Council, said, “It is important to revise related systems from time to time in accordance with rapidly changing times and conditions,” adding, “The council will actively lead related discussions to guarantee residents’ mobility rights, improve transportation welfare, and promote the sound development of the taxi transportation business ecosystem.”
