Yeongdeok-gun Completes Installation of Shark Barrier Nets!

Large Beach Tents and Shark Repellents Deployed at the Beach

Yeongdeok-gun, Gyeongbuk Province, is installing large net barriers to prevent sudden shark intrusions during the summer season.

Yeongdeok-gun Completes Installation of Shark Barrier Nets! Yeongdeok-gun has completed loading the shark barrier nets.

Recently, due to rising sea temperatures caused by global warming, sharks have appeared along the East Coast, including the waters off Pohang, causing anxiety among beachgoers. To combat this, Yeongdeok-gun completed the installation of large shark deterrent nets measuring 300 meters in length and 3.5 meters in height on the 27th at Namho, Haj?, Obo, Ky?ngj?ng, D?kch?n, and Y?ngri beaches.

The large shark deterrent nets also prevent the inflow of floating debris and jellyfish stings, allowing beachgoers to swim safely. At Goraebul, Jangsa, and Daejin beaches, existing jellyfish barriers are sufficient to block sharks.

For the safety of visitors enjoying the summer, Yeongdeok-gun has already installed shark deterrent devices, special equipment designed to scare sharks away with strong electric currents, and has now added net barriers to ensure complete protection.

Additionally, to prevent any unexpected shark appearances, safety rule and behavior guideline signs for shark damage prevention have been installed at each beach to raise awareness among beachgoers and fishermen.

Kim Dong-hee, Deputy Governor of Yeongdeok, stated, “We ask all visitors to Yeongdeok to thoroughly familiarize themselves with the shark damage prevention safety rules before entering the water and to always prioritize safety for an enjoyable summer trip. Yeongdeok-gun will continue efforts to strengthen safety measures.”
