Medical AI Battlefield... Amazon Joins the Fight Following MS and Google

Medical Record Technology 'Samgak Gyeongjaeng'

As the generative artificial intelligence (AI) craze expands across all fields, the medical sector is rapidly emerging as a battleground for AI, Bloomberg reported on the 26th (local time).

Amazon's cloud business, Amazon Web Services (AWS), announced the launch of 'AWS Health Scribe,' a service that automatically creates patient medical records using generative AI and voice recognition.

This tool recognizes conversations between healthcare workers (doctors and nurses) and patients, transcribing and summarizing them in real time to create medical records. It applies generative AI technology, which can produce text, images, and videos like a human, to the medical field. Amazon explained that this AI tool can also generate specific information such as medical terminology and medications.

Swami Sivasubramanian, Vice President of AWS's database, analytics, and machine learning services, said, "It is clear that generative AI has the power to revolutionize the healthcare and life sciences industries in many ways."

Amazon also stated that while this AI tool creates patient medical records in compliance with U.S. healthcare laws, it does not store customer information.

With Amazon's entry, the 'AI triangular competition' among Microsoft (MS) and Google in the healthcare sector has intensified. MS, regarded as the leader in generative AI technology, launched the medical record app 'Dax Express' in March through Nuance, an AI company it acquired in 2021.

This app can generate medical records by taking notes of conversations between doctors and patients using GPT-4, the latest large language model developed by OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT. Nuance explained that using Dax Express can reduce the time spent per patient by seven minutes, allowing doctors to focus more on their patients.

Google also released an AI-based chatbot called 'Med-PaLM' in January, designed to generate useful answers to questions from medical professionals and patients.

Bloomberg reported, "As companies integrate generative AI into their businesses and automate various tasks previously handled by humans, the healthcare sector is becoming a key battleground for generative AI."
