Samsung Electronics held its first-ever 'Galaxy Unpacked' event in Korea, unveiling the Galaxy Z Flip5 and Fold5. President No appeared at the start of the event, stating, "Currently, tens of millions are using foldables, and in a few years, foldable sales are expected to surpass 100 million units." He added, "Galaxy is the most popular foldable smartphone brand, leading a rapidly growing new market." He continued, "We are not just showcasing new smartphones but transforming the lifestyles of millions of users," and emphasized, "We will pursue endless perfection down to the smallest details."
Suga and Jang Wonyoung Appear... First 'Seoul Unpacked' Draws Huge Crowd
The first Unpacked event held in Korea attracted over 2,000 attendees, including about 700 international journalists, IT influencers, and partner company representatives. Popular K-pop stars such as BTS's Suga, IVE's Jang Wonyoung, TWICE's Jeongyeon, and Stray Kids were present, drawing fans who filled the area in front of the venue to capacity. During the event, Suga made a surprise appearance and when asked about the advantages of the Fold5, a Samsung Electronics representative described it as a "PC in your pocket." Jang Wonyoung took a selfie with American actress Sydney Sweeney using the Flip5, immediately checking it on the cover screen 'Flex Window' and introducing its new features.
Since holding the Galaxy S Unpacked event in Las Vegas, USA, in March 2010, Samsung Electronics has unveiled new products in major overseas cities such as New York and San Francisco in the USA, London in the UK, Berlin in Germany, and Barcelona in Spain. The company has timed Unpacked events to coincide with large-scale exhibitions like Mobile World Congress (MWC) and the International Consumer Electronics Show (IFA), or chosen locations convenient for global IT industry stakeholders to gather. This 27th Unpacked event was the first to be held in Seoul. Amid the recent global K-culture boom and increased interest in Korea, this strategy aims to showcase the presence of the 'homeland of foldables.' It is known that demand for visits to Korea by major overseas partners was high even before the Unpacked event.
Flawless Innovative Technology
The newly unveiled Galaxy Z series has upgraded the hinge technology, a core component of foldable smartphones, to the 'Flex Hinge.' The previous U-shaped hinge now folds the display inward in a droplet shape. At the same time, the structure disperses external shocks, enhancing durability. The biggest drawback of the previous model, the gap when folded, has been eliminated, allowing it to fold flat. While the Fold4 had a thickness ranging from 15.8 to 14.2 mm when folded due to lifting issues, the Fold5 maintains a consistent thickness of 13.4 mm. Additionally, the smartphone’s brain, the application processor (AP), is equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor for Galaxy, improving overall performance and battery efficiency.
Specifically, the Flip5 features an approximately 86.1 mm (3.4-inch) cover screen called the 'Flex Window.' Users can check real-time stock prices, send text messages using a QWERTY keyboard, or make payments with Samsung Pay, all while the device remains folded. The Fold5 enhances multitasking by making app switching and screen transitions more convenient, utilizing two large screens.
In addition, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra, Galaxy Tab S9+, Galaxy Tab S9, Galaxy Watch6, and Galaxy Watch6 Classic. The Galaxy Tab S9 series is equipped with the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor for Galaxy as the smartphones. It is the first to feature a vapor chamber for heat control and offers IP68 water and dust resistance. The Galaxy Watch6 series has reduced bezels, expanding the display by about 20% compared to the previous model. Sleep management features have been enhanced, allowing users to access personalized sleep coaching programs on the watch, which were previously only available on smartphones.
