Third Meeting with On-site Teachers
Revision of Autonomous Ordinance, Reorganization of Student Human Rights Ordinance
Lee Ju-ho "Will Take Firm Action"
Following the 'Seoi Elementary School Teacher Death Incident,' Lee Ju-ho, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, who has been meeting with on-site teachers, stated, "I believe that such an incident must never happen again, and as the head of the Ministry of Education, I feel a great sense of responsibility."
On the afternoon of the 26th, Lee Ju-ho held a meeting with teachers who are members of the elementary school teacher online community 'Indischool' at the Korea Educational Facilities Safety Institute in Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul. During the meeting with the teachers, Deputy Prime Minister Lee said, "The Ministry of Education is determined to use this as an opportunity to create better policies."
Sixteen on-site teachers active in Indischool participated in the meeting. This is the third time Deputy Prime Minister Lee has held a meeting with on-site teachers since the incident, following meetings on the 21st and 24th.
He announced plans to improve systems for establishing teachers' authority, such as revising the student guidance regulations, and to prepare legal grounds for these improvements. He also pledged to promptly amend unreasonable local ordinances that infringe on teachers' rights. The need to reorganize the Student Human Rights Ordinance was reiterated.
Additionally, he pointed out cases of malicious complaints from some parents and stated that guidelines would be established to strengthen the complaint response system.
Deputy Prime Minister Lee said, "It is truly regrettable and I am sorry that the measures were taken too late after the sacrifice," adding, "This time, we are determined to take definite action to ensure that such incidents never happen again."
