The Gwangju City Council's May 18 Special Committee conducted a site visit to major historical sites starting with a visit to the May 18 National Cemetery on the 26th.
All nine members of the special committee attended the site visit, accompanied by Professor Noh Young-gi, who has authored numerous books on modern Korean history and the May 18 Movement, providing historical explanations throughout the visit.
The committee sequentially visited key historical sites scattered around Mangwol-dong, the former Jeonnam Provincial Office area, and the Sangmu district, conducting on-site inspections, listening to current status reports, and discussing future utilization plans.
Chairperson Jung Da-eun expressed, "The deplorable condition of some May 18 historical sites, which seem almost abandoned, weighs heavily on my heart as it reflects the reality of the May 18 Democratic Movement we face today."
She continued, "This site visit, prepared as the first official activity since the launch of the special committee, became an opportunity to deepen the understanding of the May 18 Democratic Movement among the committee members, thanks to Professor Noh Young-gi's voluntary contribution."
Through this site visit, the committee plans to assess the management status of the May 18 historical sites, listen to current conditions, and explore efficient preservation and management measures going forward.
