Comprehensive Inspection of Flood-Related Sites Including Rainwater Pump Stations, Semi-basement Houses, and Dongbu Underpass on the Afternoon of the 25th
Emphasis on Thorough Preemptive Measures and Proactive Response to Ensure Dongdaemun-gu Remains Free from Wind and Flood Damage
On the 25th, Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, conducted on-site inspections of flood control facilities and flood-vulnerable areas in preparation for heavy rainfall. With flooding damage continuing nationwide, the comprehensive flood-related inspection was undertaken to ensure the safety of the district residents.
The mayor first visited the Jegi 1 Rainwater Pump Station to check the facilities and operational status. The district currently operates a total of 31 rainwater pump stations and temporary rainwater pump stations, which rapidly activate pumps during rainfall to prevent flood damage. Additionally, 41 river access control and entry-blocking facilities have been installed and are operated to prepare for possible river overflows. Time was also taken to inspect whether the access control facilities installed at Jeongneungcheon Stream are functioning properly.
To prevent flood damage such as property loss and casualties, which are prone to occur in low-lying areas due to heavy rain, the district supported the installation of operable security windows and water barriers for households at risk in semi-basement houses. The operable security window is designed to allow quick escape through the window if the front door cannot be opened due to water pressure during flooding. Out of 63 households requiring security window installation due to flood concerns, installation has been completed in 41 households. On this day, Mayor Lee visited a house in Hwikyung-dong to personally check the status of the security window and water barrier installations.
Furthermore, he visited the Dongbu Underpass near Sini-mun Station, completed in 2005, to inspect the automatic entry blocking facilities and the mechanical and electrical rooms related to drainage. He also examined the drainage condition and any damage or cracks in the retaining wall located in the Hwikyung Je 5 District housing maintenance-type redevelopment area.
Mayor Lee Pil-hyung encouraged the facility personnel and urged them to prepare thoroughly to prevent any wind and flood damage. He added, “It is regrettable that record-breaking heavy rains have caused extensive damage nationwide,” and stated, “We will do our utmost to make Dongdaemun-gu a safe district.”
