This field visit marks the first activity of the 5·18 Special Committee, aiming to inspect the management status of historical sites and explore efficient preservation and management plans.

First, after paying respects at the National Cemetery and the Old Cemetery area, the committee will proceed through the main gate of Chonnam National University and then move to the former Jeonnam Provincial Government Building. After receiving a briefing on the current status there, an inspection will be conducted.

In the afternoon, the committee will visit Sangmugwan, Jeonil Building, and the 5·18 Democracy Movement Archives, followed by an inspection of the 5·18 History Park (505 Security Unit). At this site, issues such as water leakage will also be checked.

The Gwangju Metropolitan Council 5·18 Special Committee consists of nine members: Chairperson Jeong Da-eun, Vice Chairperson Myeong Jin, and council members Kang Su-hoon, Shim Chang-wook, Ahn Pyeong-hwan, Lee Gwi-soon, Lee Myeong-no, Chae Eun-ji, and Choi Ji-hyun.

The committee will be active until June 30, 2024, working on revising ordinances related to 5·18, as well as engaging in activities addressing major issues such as 5·18 commemorative projects, institutional reforms, education policies, inspection of facilities and records management, inclusion of the preamble in the constitution, and efforts toward national and global recognition.

Chairperson Jeong Da-eun stated, “The management of historical sites is one of the many May issues facing Gwangju in 2023. We will visit key historical sites, including the Old Cemetery area where a 10 billion won-scale sanctification project is underway, to check whether these sites are being neglected or damaged under the guise of preserving their original form, and whether they are being utilized in accordance with their historical value.”

She added, “We will strive to protect these precious assets to carry on the spirit of May.”
