Haman-gun Public Health Center Conducts Environmental Inspection to Prevent 'Legionellosis' in Multi-use Facilities...

Gyeongnam Haman-gun Public Health Center is conducting water system environment inspections at 12 multi-use facilities within the jurisdiction, including nursing hospitals, elderly welfare facilities, large public baths, and lodging establishments, from the 20th to the 25th, in preparation for the summer season when the risk of Legionellosis occurrence is high.

Legionellosis is a third-class legally designated infectious disease caused by bacteria present in contaminated water such as cooling tower water of large buildings, showerheads, and patient respiratory therapy devices, which infect the human body through the respiratory tract in the form of droplets. High-risk groups include immunocompromised individuals, chronic lung disease patients, smokers, cancer patients, and those with chronic diseases, exhibiting symptoms such as influenza or pneumonia.

In particular, contamination of water supply facilities in multi-use facilities by Legionella bacteria can cause outbreaks, making water system environment management extremely important.

The Public Health Center plans to conduct cleaning and disinfection for multi-use facilities exceeding the Legionella bacteria standards based on inspection results, followed by re-inspection, and will provide education on management methods for environmental factors to maintain a clean environment.

A health center official stated, “We will continue activities to prevent Legionellosis through water system environment management of target facilities and strive to protect the health and safety of local residents from infectious diseases.”
