Busan Metropolitan Office of Education is set to actively promote a project to relocate school fences and widen school routes.
On the 24th, Busan Office of Education announced that during the summer vacation, it will relocate fences at five schools?Mora Elementary School, Gapyeong Elementary School, Donghyeon Elementary School, Wolnae Elementary School, and Busanjin Girls' Middle School?to secure safe school routes.
This project is part of the student safety measures for school routes announced last May, involving the removal of school fences and flower beds to expand pedestrian paths. Depending on conditions, temporary entrances may be opened, and spaces for school vehicle pick-up and drop-off may also be created.
The Office of Education conducted a full survey in May on improving school routes by relocating fences and selected 44 schools as priority targets after on-site inspections from 80 schools that expressed interest. Among these, construction will be carried out this summer vacation at five schools, including Mora Elementary School, based on urgency and priority.
The school route on the left side of Mora Elementary School’s main gate is only 1.2 meters wide, making it difficult for two students to pass simultaneously. Especially during peak times when students gather, safe passage is challenging.
Therefore, part of the flower bed inside Mora Elementary School will be removed, and the fence will be pushed inward to secure a pedestrian path up to 2.2 meters wide. The Office of Education expects that after construction, students and citizens will be able to pass safely.
Starting with this summer vacation construction, Busan Office of Education plans to sequentially promote school route improvement projects at 44 schools. Additionally, it will continue to identify more target schools to accelerate the creation of a safe commuting environment.
Ha Yoon-su, Superintendent of Busan Metropolitan Office of Education, stated, “Our office will promptly address parts that can be resolved internally to ensure student commuting safety and will strongly demand improvements from related agencies where cooperation is needed.”
