Notification on Top Status Bar for Defective SIM Installation
Applicable to Galaxy S23 Series and New Smartphones
LG Uplus announced on the 24th that it has become the first in the telecommunications industry to equip smartphones with a function that notifies users of SIM card malfunctions. To use mobile communication, a SIM card must be installed in a device such as a smartphone. The SIM card acts as a kind of "ID card" that verifies which mobile carrier plan the customer has subscribed to.
To use telecommunication services, the device, network, and SIM card must all function properly. When customers experience service disruptions, it was difficult to determine which of these three was the cause. Especially since SIM cards are consumable items that can suddenly stop working, customers often had to spend a lot of time and effort visiting smartphone service centers or contacting carrier customer centers without being able to accurately identify the root cause.
LG Uplus developed a notification function to determine SIM card malfunctions in collaboration with Samsung Electronics. The newly developed function automatically notifies users via the smartphone’s notification bar at the top of the screen when a faulty SIM card is installed and the device is powered on. This feature is available to customers using the Samsung Electronics Galaxy S23 series released this year and will be provided on newly released smartphones in the future.
Jinhyuk Lee, Head of Mobile Service Development Lab (Senior Executive Director) at LG Uplus, said, "We expect to further enhance customer satisfaction with U+ mobile services by providing a function that allows customers to easily identify the cause when experiencing communication issues due to SIM card malfunctions. We will continue to improve usability from the customer’s perspective and strive to offer services and technologies that innovate 'customer value.'"
