Seodaemun-gu Volunteers Sweat Hard for Flood Recovery in Chungbuk Region

Over 50 Volunteers Conduct Service Activities in Goesan-gun, Chungbuk, Damaged by Record Heavy Rain

Volunteer Efforts to Continue on the 25th with Flood Recovery in Buyeo-gun, Chungnam, Designated as a Special Disaster Area

Amid significant damage caused by record-breaking heavy rainfall in the Chungcheong region, Seodaemun-gu (District Mayor Lee Seongheon) announced on the 21st that it conducted flood recovery volunteer activities by visiting Goesan-gun, Chungbuk, which was designated as a special disaster area.

Goesan-gun experienced overflow from the Goesan Dam, resulting in 262 households and 564 displaced persons, as well as severe human and material damage including flooding of houses, commercial buildings, farmland, and landslides.

In response, Seodaemun-gu quickly formed a 'Flood Recovery Volunteer Group' consisting of a total of 40 people, including volunteers recruited through the 1365 Volunteer Portal, volunteers with disaster recovery experience, and 10 public officials.

They participated in various flood damage recovery activities such as collecting discarded plastic waste washed away by the heavy rain, repairing farmland including sorting damaged chili pepper stakes, and removing various floating debris.

Volunteer Kang (male, in his 30s, Seodaemun-gu, Seoul), who participated in the service that day, said, "After seeing the flood damage on the news, I couldn't just stay at home, so I joined the volunteer activity through the Seodaemun-gu Volunteer Center. Although the weather is hot, I can endure it if I can help the flood victims who are suffering overnight."

Park Sangho, head of Cheongcheon-ri, Goesan-myeon, said, "Most of the village residents are elderly, so I was worried that the recovery work would be slow, but I am very grateful that many volunteers came to help organize the farmland."

Lee Seongheon, Mayor of Seodaemun-gu, said, "Due to this extreme heavy rain, many households in Goesan are experiencing difficulties from flooding. I hope that Seodaemun-gu’s volunteer activities have helped the residents recover their daily lives quickly."

With more monsoon rain forecasted this weekend, on the 25th, over 80 Seodaemun-gu office staff, including Mayor Lee Seongheon, will visit the flood-affected areas in Buyeo-gun, Chungnam, to continue recovery activities such as collecting and organizing crops.
