An unidentified international mail item was delivered in Gwangju, triggering an emergency response.
According to the police on the 21st, a total of more than 29 related reports have been received.
That night, a report was filed that an unidentified international mail item from Taiwan was delivered to a restaurant in Yuchon-dong, Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City.
The police, fire department, and military authorities formed a joint team and inspected the unopened mail item using equipment, but no particular abnormalities were found.
The military authorities have collected the mail item and plan to send it to the Agency for Defense Development for detailed examination.
No patients reported symptoms such as dizziness or breathing difficulties, and all personnel at the scene have withdrawn, with vehicle controls lifted.
The joint team is also checking similar reports received from Ssangchon-dong Gwangmyeong Heights Town and Hwajeong Ellice Prestige.
A joint team official met at the scene said, "There is only one piece of equipment that can detect unknown substances, so we cannot inspect each reported site one by one while moving around," adding, "It would be best to collect them all for now."
In Dong-gu, a total of 14 reports have been received and are under investigation.
In Gwangsan-gu, a total of 7 reports were received, but all were confirmed to be false alarms. Most were parcels sent by children.
A Gwangsan Police Station official stated, "It is presumed that these were urgent reports made after receiving the Gwangju city emergency disaster text message reporting the discovery of mail suspected to contain harmful substances from Taiwan."
Nam-gu had 3 reports; among them, one was opened and found to contain normal items, and the remaining two unopened items will be handed over to the fire department.
In Buk-gu, 2 reports were received and are under investigation.
