Jongno-gu (District Mayor Jeong Mun-heon) is conducting the ‘2023 Young Artists Open Call Exhibition’ at Go Hee-dong Art Museum and Sangchonjae to support young artists and revitalize local culture, and is recruiting participating artists.

Selected artists will participate in the second half exhibition held from mid-September to the end of November.

Go Hee-dong Art Museum held an open call exhibition last year as well, while Sangchonjae is launching this initiative for the first time this year.

Previously, in 2022, Go Hee-dong Art Museum held an open call exhibition alongside its regular exhibitions, showcasing diverse content harmonizing with the artistic world of Chunggok Go Hee-dong and the museum’s spatial characteristics, which received positive responses from visitors.

The theme for this second open call exhibition has been set as ‘Self-Portrait.’ Inspired by the self-portrait, a representative work of Korea’s first Western-style painter Go Hee-dong, the exhibition plans to offer a time to explore various ‘self-portraits’ of contemporary artists living today.

Meanwhile, Sangchonjae, which has focused on traditional cultural content, is conducting this open call to develop new content that incorporates diverse reinterpretations of space beyond traditional time-space images.

By exhibiting works where the beauty of tradition and modernity coexist, Sangchonjae aims to establish itself as a key space in Seochon leading creativity and trends in traditional culture.

The application period is until the 31st of this month, and for detailed information such as eligibility, please refer to the Jongno Cultural Foundation website. Results will be announced after screening in August. Participating artists will be supported not only with exhibition space but also with exhibition archiving, promotional materials, interview video production, and artwork production costs.

District Mayor Jeong Mun-heon stated, “We hope many artists interested in this planned exhibition held at the ‘Go Hee-dong Art Museum,’ where Korea’s first Western-style painter Chunggok Go Hee-dong lived and worked for 41 years, and ‘Sangchonjae,’ built in the 19th-century traditional hanok style and providing various cultural contents for local residents, will participate actively.”
