Yongin "Strengthening Competitiveness of L-Shaped Semiconductor Belt"
Pyeongtaek "Fostering as the Semiconductor Capital of Korea"
Anseong "Turning Point for Enhancing Urban Competitiveness"
Local governments in the southern metropolitan area, which were collectively designated as national advanced strategic industries and specialized complexes for materials, parts, and equipment in the semiconductor sector, celebrated the announcement. Although there were some calls for balanced development between the northern and southern parts of the metropolitan area, it was ultimately reaffirmed that this region, equipped with abundant infrastructure, is the optimal location for creating a semiconductor mega cluster.

According to the decision made on the 20th by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy at the National Advanced Strategic Industry Committee and the Materials, Parts, and Equipment Competitiveness Enhancement Committee, the winner in the 'National Advanced Strategic Industry Specialized Complex' semiconductor sector was Yongin, Gyeonggi Province. Three sites were collectively designated: ▲Yongin Namsa Advanced System Semiconductor Cluster (Samsung Electronics), ▲Yongin Wonsam Semiconductor Cluster (SK Hynix), and ▲Yongin Giheung Nongseo District (Samsung Electronics).
The remaining site, ▲Pyeongtaek Godeok Internationalization Planning District General Industrial Complex (Samsung Electronics), also went to a local government in the southern metropolitan area. The total designated area of these four districts amounts to 16.33 million square meters.
Anseong City was also a winner in this designation. An area of 1.57 million square meters around Dongsin-ri, Bogae-myeon, was designated in the semiconductor sector of the 'Materials, Parts, and Equipment Specialized Complex.'
Lee Sang-il, Mayor of Yongin, said, "With our city designated as the largest specialized complex nationwide, the competitiveness of the 'Yongin L-shaped Semiconductor Belt,' led by Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix as leading companies, has been further strengthened." He added, "Based on the government's innovative support, we will mobilize all administrative power to transform Yongin into a global semiconductor hub city leading the national economy."
Jung Jang-seon, Mayor of Pyeongtaek, also stated in a briefing immediately after the government announcement, "We will develop 7.7 million square meters into the Pyeongtaek Semiconductor Cluster and nurture it as the semiconductor capital of South Korea." He explained, "We will establish cooperative governance with Pyeongtaek Meister High School, International University, and Pyeongtaek University to cultivate regular talents equipped with practical skills."
Kim Bo-ra, Mayor of Anseong, said, "The designation of the Materials, Parts, and Equipment Specialized Complex is a new opportunity for regional development and a turning point for strengthening urban competitiveness." She added, "Based on Anseong's geographical strengths, we will take responsibility for the semiconductor downstream industry and transform into an advanced city that creates future growth engines."
Meanwhile, the designated areas will receive support such as expedited permit processing, installation of sites, infrastructure, and convenience facilities, as well as workforce development. Additionally, resident institutions or project implementers will benefit from exemptions and reductions in national and public property usage fees, lease fees, project charges, preliminary feasibility studies for support projects, and various regulatory special cases.
