Dongdaemun-gu Mayor Ilhyung Lee Walks Along Mural, Communicates with University Students

Ilhyung Lee, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, visited the mural street near Seoul Dongdaemun Police Station at 2 p.m. on the 20th and conducted an on-site mural inspection with university student administrative interns.

To implement communication-based administration that finds answers on site, Mayor Lee walked approximately 700 meters of the mural street with the students and engaged in conversation.

The first summer vacation university student administrative internship program of 2023 includes a total of 65 students, among whom 4 were assigned to the Urban Planning Division. They were tasked with inspecting 224 mural sites within the district throughout July.

The inspection site is near Dongdaemun-gu Police Station, created last year as part of the "Bright Street Mural Improvement Project." It is a walking path along apartment walls designed to improve pedestrian environments and make the city more walkable. The murals feature familiar characters such as Podori and Posuni, promoting district publicity and traffic safety campaigns.

Woo Si-yeon, a student from Korea University who participated in the inspection, said, "As more apartments and high-rise buildings continue to be built in Cheongnyangni, more people will live or visit here in the future, so I think it is important to improve the aesthetics and safety of Cheongnyangni." Kim Do-hoon from the University of Seoul suggested, "It would be good to remove various stains such as dust and rain marks on the exterior walls and maintain the walkway blocks to create a cleaner street."

Mayor Ilhyung Lee stated, "Communication is always the beginning and end of district administration, and the answer lies on site," adding, "We will actively reflect the demands of the administrative interns in district administration."

Dongdaemun-gu announced that it plans to regularly inspect murals in the future to repair or remove damaged murals and create a clean street environment.
