Full Efforts in Flood Damage Recovery Response
Korea Rural Community Corporation recently announced on the 20th that it will focus all efforts on rapid drainage and emergency restoration of agricultural production infrastructure in areas affected by extreme heavy rain to prepare for the forecasted rainfall.
Since the 13th, heavy rain has continued, causing various damages such as flooding of 25 reservoirs and drainage facilities and agricultural lands as of the morning of the 20th.
At Changpyeong Reservoir in Bonghwa-gun, Gyeongbuk, the mountain side slope of the relocated road collapsed, and some soil was removed, but due to concerns about further collapse, traffic control is in place. Also, at four locations including Jangsan Reservoir in Geumsan, Chungnam, where residents were evacuated due to anticipated overflow risks of reservoirs and downstream rivers, safety was secured by lowering reservoir water levels through the installation of temporary gates called 'siphons,' and residents have returned.
In addition, to prevent secondary damage in case of additional heavy rain, the Corporation is focusing on restoring 15 flooded drainage facilities around the Geumgang and Miho Rivers, including those damaged by long-term operation of mechanical equipment, and is preparing by urgently installing 226 mobile pumps in areas where electrical facilities were flooded.
Also, through the Corporation's internal 'Facility Inspection 119 Center' emergency technical support, special inspections were conducted targeting D-grade reservoirs. While strengthening monitoring activities to secure the stability of reservoir slopes weakened by prolonged rainfall, disaster preparedness technology is being supported.
Furthermore, in rural areas where urgent restoration is needed due to heavy rain damage such as Chungcheongnam-do, Chungcheongbuk-do, Jeonbuk, and Gyeongbuk, the Corporation plans to provide maximum support to affected farms by removing sediment from agricultural waterways and organizing farming tools.
Lee Byung-ho, President of Korea Rural Community Corporation, stated, "In preparation for the upcoming heavy rain, we will promptly restore damaged facilities and mobilize all flood control materials, manpower, and budgets for drainage of flooded farmland to ensure the safety of the public and the swift recovery of farmers' daily lives."
The Korea Rural Community Corporation is installing a siphon to control the water level at Baekseok Reservoir in Jeonju, Jeonbuk.
