"LGD Surpasses 50% OLED Share... Competes with OLED Gaming Monitors"

The organic light-emitting diode (OLED) wave, in which LG Display holds a strong position in the gaming monitor market, is gaining momentum.

On the 21st, global market research firm Omdia forecasted that the share of OLED in the 4K (UHD) gaming monitor market will rapidly grow from 7% last year to surpass 50% in 2024. Shipments of OLED panels for gaming monitors are expected to more than double from 800,000 units this year to 1.7 million units next year. With continuous releases of OLED monitors, there is also a projection that the OLED share could increase to 61% by 2025. OLED is becoming the dominant trend in the premium gaming monitor market.

The display is a crucial element when playing games. OLED, which emits light from each pixel itself, offers vivid and three-dimensional image quality, fast response times, and a wide variable refresh rate range (40~240Hz), making it a dream display for gamers. Additionally, the amount of harmful blue light emitted is about half that of LCDs. The flickering that causes headaches does not occur, so eye fatigue is reduced even after long hours of gaming.

OLED panels for gaming monitors are mainly led by domestic companies. LG Display, which opened the gaming market with 40-inch OLED panels, began full-scale mass production this year of 27-inch OLED panels optimized for gaming and 45-inch ultrawide (21:9) OLED panels. Currently, it supplies display panels to global IT and gaming companies such as LG Electronics, ASUS, and Corsair.

LG Display’s gaming OLED offers the fastest response time (0.03ms) and high refresh rate (up to 240Hz) among existing panels, delivering clearer and smoother motion even during fast screen transitions. By applying a special polarizer, it minimizes the ‘image reflection’ phenomenon where surrounding objects are reflected on the screen in dark scenes. Perfect black expression accurately conveys the colors intended by the original work. A unique LG Display technology, the ‘bendable’ feature, allows the screen to be freely curved and flattened up to a maximum curvature of 800R (the degree of bending of a circle with a radius of 800mm), enabling the setting of curvature optimized for each game genre.
