The Daesang Group University Student Smartphone Film Festival is a cultural exchange activity where university students from around the world travel to each other’s countries, produce short films, and experience Daesang Group’s brand identity of ‘Respect.’ The festival had been suspended since 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and resumed after three years, attracting the highest number of applicants in its history this year and drawing great interest.
This year’s festival was held under the slogan “We respect Dream, Passion, and Diversity,” targeting three countries: Korea, Vietnam, and Indonesia. After a judging process, a total of 48 university students were finally selected. Six students, two from each country, formed one team, making a total of eight teams that planned and produced films on the theme of ‘Food and Respect.’
The selected university students spent about a month holding video conferences to write scripts and plan filming, then traveled for 18 nights and 19 days across Vietnam, Indonesia, and Korea to produce their films. Daesang Group fully covered all expenses including round-trip airfare, local accommodation, meals, and transportation.
The awards ceremony held on the 19th at Daesang Inno Park in Magok, Seoul, proceeded in the order of stage greetings by the eight teams, film screenings, judges’ comments, and the awards presentation. Awards were given for the Grand Prize, Excellence Award, Promotion Award, and individual awards. The judging panel included Director Kwon Hyung-jin, winner of the Best New Director Award at the 44th Daejong Film Awards, and Writer Woo Kwang-hoon, recipient of the 2021 Hallyu Culture Award in the director and producer category, adding professionalism to the evaluation.
The honor of the Grand Prize went to the ‘EATERS’ team (Park Jun-oh and five others) for their film ‘Taste of the World.’ The film portrayed a brother’s efforts to show the world to his sick younger sister through foods from various countries, telling a warm story of family love centered on respect among family members through food. The Grand Prize-winning team was awarded a prize of 10 million KRW. The winning works and making-of films will be released on the official Daesang E.T.F.F. YouTube channel.
Choi Sung-soo, CEO of Daesang Holdings, said, “We hope that university students experience and internalize Daesang Group’s corporate philosophy of respect and grow into global talents. Going forward, Daesang Group will continue to place respect at the center of all management activities and strive to put it into practice.”
