Yangcheon-gu Adds 10 More Smart Shade Shelters to Prepare for Heatwave

Yangcheon-gu (District Mayor Lee Gijae) announced that it will install 10 additional smart shade shelters at pedestrian crosswalks with heavy foot traffic to provide shade from the sun during the summer heatwave.

According to the district, the number of smart shade shelters will be expanded from the existing 16 locations by 10 units, operating a total of 98 heat-relief shelters including 72 foldable shade shelters, aiming to enhance convenience for residents and thoroughly prevent heat-related illnesses and other heatwave damages.

The newly installed smart shade shelters will incorporate a multifunctional system integrated with Internet of Things (IoT) technology. Environmental information generated through temperature, humidity, illuminance, and wind direction sensors will be analyzed to enable automatic opening and closing. Administrators can also remotely control the shelters in real time via a mobile app, allowing for swift response during adverse weather conditions such as typhoons. Additionally, these eco-friendly energy facilities are equipped with built-in solar power supply systems, which are expected to contribute to reducing maintenance costs.

Based on the demand survey results from the first half of the year and reflecting residents’ requests, the district plans to provide these smart shade shelters as waiting areas for residents by September, installing them at pedestrian crosswalks along main roads in 10 areas with high foot traffic: Mok 1-3-dong, Sinwol 4, 5, 7-dong, and Sinjeong 1, 3, 4-dong.

Lee Gijae, Mayor of Yangcheon-gu, stated, “With this summer expected to bring record-breaking heatwaves, we are expanding the installation of smart shade shelters where people can cool down even briefly when going outside.” He added, “We will continue to do our best to provide life-centered administrative services that reflect the needs of our residents.”
