132 Cases Detected in 3 Movie Information Programs
Broadcasting Review Board: "Viewers Unprotected from Provocative Content"
It has been revealed that non-standard language such as 'ppans run', 'goerall', and 'jonbeo' is openly broadcast on public television.
According to the 'Survey on the Use of Broadcast Language in Movie Information Programs' conducted by the Korea Communications Standards Commission (KCSC) on the 19th, 132 cases of inappropriate broadcast language use were detected in terrestrial movie information programs such as KBS 2TV's Good Movie, MBC TV's Start! Video Travel, and SBS TV's Connection! Movie World.
The survey targeted one episode each from the three broadcasters' movie information programs aired on May 27-28. Expressions that undermine broadcast dignity, violate language regulations, or potentially hinder communication were pointed out.
Examples of expressions undermining broadcast dignity include Connection! Movie World describing a scene where the protagonist assaults a bodyguard working at a bar as "a few more hits of grace," and Start! Video Travel referring to a character participating in the movie Hwangsanbeol as a "crazy (a euphemism for profanity) free pass award."
Examples of expressions violating language regulations include Connection! Movie World using the phrase "Ireon C..." by inserting an alphabet letter into "Ireon ssi..." (a sound expressing dissatisfaction or displeasure), and Start! Video Travel stating "In such cases, 'ppans run' (a slang term meaning to run away) is the best strategy," while crudely depicting a person fleeing in underwear.
Other expressions identified as potentially hindering communication include "goerall-mateun (an internet slang meaning 'a personality that is excessively strange') personality," "gapbun (sudden atmosphere) You Quiz," "Goguryeo's endurance K jonbeo ('jonbeo' being a crude expression for 'enduring hard')," "janjanbari (an internet slang meaning 'very little and small') accident," and "pposiraegi (an internet slang meaning 'small and cute like crumbs') past."
The KCSC expressed concern, stating, "It is very worrisome that provocative expressions are being exposed to defenseless viewers for the sake of movie promotion or program entertainment," and added, "The unconscious language habits of hosts and guests greatly influence viewers in providing movie information."
Furthermore, the commission emphasized, "Providing movie information plays an important role in broadening the public's perspective on mass media and increasing interest in movies," and urged, "Cast members should focus on delivering accurate movie information to viewers rather than benefiting from promotions by movie companies or distributors, and must exercise careful attention in their remarks."
